The 90th annual Academy Awards were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel last night and oh what a night it was for movies. Time to debrief, talk about who won and how close my predictions were.
Overall, I was very satisfied with all the awards presented last night. All of my favorite films of the year were honored in at least one category. My biggest upset was that "This is Me" from "The Greatest Showman" lost the Oscar for Best Original Song to "Remember Me" from "Coco." Guess that just goes to show that there really is no competing with Disney when it comes to well-written, meaningful catchy tunes.
The biggest surprise for me was how "The Shape of Water" swooped in for the Best Picture Oscar when I was totally expecting "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing. Missouri" (one of my favorite Oscar movies this year) to take home the biggest award of the night. That being said, I'm still happy since "The Shape of Water" (my other favorite Oscar movie of the year) truly is a fantastic movie that on paper sounds ridiculous but - thanks to Best Director Winner, Guillermo del Toro's dedication and skill - was one of the most original and captivating films of 2017. Good for you Guillermo, you deserve it.
Like I said before, I'm pretty happy with how things turned out. I'm sure some people feel like Greta Gerwig and "Lady Bird" were snubbed but hey, there was definitely some steep competition. Now let's take a look at the rest of my predictions. In Red were my predictions, in Green are the actual winners, and in Gold are where my predictions were the actual winners. All in all, I did pretty good.
